“Remembering MX”

Projects/Cursors & Icons

Preview of the 'Remember MX' files

Remembering MX is a collection of five Photoshop files, showcasing some very old icons I created in 2004 when Macromedia’s Studio MX was still the big thing. The files contain the vector shapes for each application’s logo, and layer styles for each design so that you can create your own or reproduce their appearance.

Whilst I can’t fault Adobe’s minimalistic “coloured-box with lettering style” for the CS3 applications, I’d like to think that the MX Suite designs will forever be engraved in the minds of all the designers from all those years ago. I don’t think any design have come close to how the MX designs clearly and brilliantly portrayed the software suite.

As updated, the downloads below now list a set of icons for Windows XP/Vista and Mac OSX. The Vista & Mac icons are untested, so if you do use them, leave a comment and let me know how they went. Only 32-bit icons are included.

The Photoshop files are compatible with Photoshop CS and above. It may work in Photoshop 6 and 7, except I believe that some layer blending options won’t be preserved correctly.

“Caustic” Cursors

Projects/Cursors & Icons

Preview of the 'Caustic' cursor set

Caustic is the sibling of Bittersweet, featuring the same minimalism, but designed for those who like colorful and tail-less cursors. The subtle white glow has been removed and the working & busy animations have been replaced. There have also been a few minor size changes. This set comes in six colours; 3 vibrant and 3 subtle schemes. “Fade” is my personal favorite — but I’m just a sucker for the lime-yellow-purple colour combination.

“Bittersweet” Cursors

Projects/Cursors & Icons

Preview of the 'Bittersweet' cursor set

Bittersweet is an adaptation of the traditional Mac OS cursor set for Windows 2000 onwards. The cursors is designed with a strong shadow and a subtle white glow; making it appear as if the cursors exist on a pane of glass above the monitor. This ensures the cursors are distinct from their environment. The “busy” and “waiting” animations have been replaced with a specky black & white light-show. The second revision of this cursor set introduces 4 new coloured busy and waiting animations.

“Tonic Water” Cursors

Projects/Cursors & Icons

Preview of the 'Tonic Water' cursor set

I’ll admit I’m rather picky when it comes to my cursors. Glaring at the same little pointer for a half a dozen hours each day becomes quite the eyesore. As of yet, the only cursor scheme simple enough for my liking has been Apple’s OSX cursors. However, the one downside I find with nearly every OSX cursor pack for Windows is that the “busy” and “waiting” animations are usually limited to either blue or “graphite”. This is fine for OSX themes, but I tend to change my visual style quite frequently, so I want to be able to change my cursors to suit.

To that extent, I decided to design “Tonic Water” (pun intended). “Tonic Water” is a conversion of Mac OSX’s cursors for Windows 2000 onwards, with additional “busy” and “waiting” animations. The pack contains 5 new animations, as well as the 2 originals. The new colours are named after the cocktail mixers and bases.

Windows XP Icons for Vista Drive Icon

Projects/Cursors & Icons

Preview of the replacement icons

Vista Drive Icon is a fairly handy utility for Windows XP which changes the icons of the your drives, so that they show a small bar indicating the available space. By default, Vista Drive Icon’s icons are from Vista, and don’t suit the Windows XP style. The icon pack below replaces the Vista icons with their Windows XP counterparts whilst retaining the size bar.

These have been tested with and work with Vista Drive Icon 1.3/1.4.
